Overview
Tucked between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, tiny Slovenia punches way above its weight in the tourism stakes. Italianate flair and Slavic style come together in a country that boasts fabulous mountain scenery, barren limestone landscapes and a rich cultural history, making train travel in Slovenia a joy.
Slovenia’s real draw is its wonderful rural landscapes. But make time for its cities too. Three towns not to miss are the capital Ljubljana , the historic city of Ptuj in eastern Slovenia and picture-perfect Piran on the coast.
Train travel in Slovenia is easy and comfortable. The national rail operator Slovenske zeleznice (or SZ for short) manages a compact network dating back to when Slovenia was a province of Austria-Hungary. Ljubljana is the hub of the network, but not all lines lead invariably to and from the capital.
One of the best things to do in Slovenia is to take a real gem of a rural train route which runs north from Sežana, skirting (but not crossing) the Italian border to Lake Bled and beyond, taking in fine limestone landscapes of the Soča Valley along the way before winding through the Julian Alps. From here, explore Triglav, Slovenia’s only national park . Dominated by the eastern Julian Alps, it is one of Europe’s largest national reserves, accessible from the gateway station of Lesce Bled.
The country is traversed by many long-distance services, including direct trains from Zagreb to Munich and Zurich and direct trains from Ljubljana to Trieste (and beyond) in Italy (tickets for this journey can be bought locally).
PLEASE NOTE: We don't currently sell tickets for domestic train journeys within Slovenia, just international ones. You can, however, book tickets to Slovenia from cities such as Innsbruck, Stuttgart, Munich, Vienna and Zürich.
